Tim Walz’s Run for Vice President Rooted in Football Coaching Past

From High School to the National Stage

Before Tim Walz became a congressman and the governor of Minnesota, he was a successful football coach at Mankato West High School. His former players remember him for his tough defense and his dedication to his team.

A State Championship and a Legacy of Success

Walz led the Mankato West Scarlets to a state championship in 1989. His teams were known for their aggressive 44 defense, which he described as “running through the whistle on every single play.”

Walz’s coaching career spanned 16 seasons, during which he compiled a record of 115-47. He was named the Minnesota High School Football Coach of the Year in 1995.

A Campaign Built on Defense

Walz’s football background was on display during his speech at the Democratic National Convention. He used his time as a coach to highlight his leadership skills and his commitment to teamwork.

“We ran a 44 defense, we ran through the whistle on every single play, and we even won a state championship,” Walz said. “That’s what I’m going to do as your vice president. I’m going to defend our country, our values, and our future.”
