Cicadas: The Buzzing Insects of Summer

Introduction

Cicadas are fascinating creatures that produce a loud, buzzing song that can be heard throughout the summer. These insects are members of the superfamily Cicadoidea and are physically distinguished by their stout bodies, broad heads, clear, membraned wings, and large compound eyes.

Characteristics

Cicadas are large insects, with some species having a wingspan of over 5 inches. They have membranous wings and triangular-formation of three ocelli on the top of their heads. Their short, bristle-like antennae are a characteristic feature of cicadas.

Habitat

Cicadas live on every continent except Antarctica. They are commonly found in warm, temperate climates and can be found in forests, grasslands, and urban areas. Cicadas typically live in trees, where they feed on sap from the leaves.

Life Cycle

Cicadas have a unique life cycle that can last for several years. The majority of their lives is spent underground, as nymphs, feeding on roots. When the time is right, they emerge from the ground to molt and become adults. After mating, the adult cicadas will lay eggs, and the nymphs will hatch and begin their journey underground.
